The Magrath Trading Company has been a part of Magrath for a very long time. As a child, I remember my Grandmother sending me 'uptown' (ie the block and a half it takes to walk over there from pretty much anywhere in town) to purchase toys or rings. In those days, you could call up the grocery, place your order and have them deliver it to your home. If you weren't home, they would just leave it for you on your kitchen table (only city folk locked their doors). They also carried a little of everything back then - clothes, material, tools, shoes, and groceries. I remember once digging down into the back part of the shelf and pulling out a great pair of black high top sneakers that had been sitting on the shelf for some time. I happily paid the years old price. I also remember a row of big old irrigation gum boots high up on a shelf near the ceiling. Today, however, it is back to basics - groceries and other convenience items. It is only recently that the Home Hardware portion of the store has been separated from the Magrath Trading Company and sold to new owners (in 2006).
